In their heyday – brewpub

Welly is now not only the coffee capital of the world but making a name for itself with craft beer. Breweries or brewpubs are just popping up everywhere. I love the fact that even if you’re not a beer drinker, they offer spirits, all types of wine,  bubbles and booch. Today we visited the coolest, funky, bright, hip brewpub on upper Cuba Street; HeyDay beer. Continue reading

Best gluten-free pasta ever!

Eleven fifty four, come in please. Your number is up, but in a good way! 1154 Pasteria is the new hip pasta joint in town that was the former Ernesto’s. Another brilliant venture created by the Italian-Kiwi Bresolin brothers, who also own Scopa opposite and Bresolin in Willis Street. Continue reading

Italian brunch sort-of

Pandoro [panˈdɔːro] is a traditional Italian sweet yeast bread, most popular around Christmas and New Year. Typically a Veronese product, pandoro is traditionally shaped like a frustum with an eight-pointed star section. Continue reading

Love at First Sight

Anything French, I’m sold. My darling friend Hemma who abandoned me in Welly and moved to Auckland, suggested Catroux as a place for our catchup. How she knows me so well. This was so love at first sight. Continue reading

Gypseys, tramps and thieves!

Gipsy Kitchen in Jessie Street is the baby sister of Gipsy Kitchen in Strathmore- not spelt gypsy the way we know it. The Strathmore location at night is fab. Their tapas are to die for. The city location is on a way smaller scale but packs in a lot of punch within its tight space. The ecletic décor is divine; from the fabulous bright mural outside which flows nicely into equally bright colours inside. No sign of any gypsies, tramps or thieves today though. Continue reading

Two grey Brasserie and Bar

What a fabulous makeover is the new Two Grey brasserie and bar,  (a clever jeu de mots with the location; 2 Grey St) which catches a few people out. If you say the old Arizona, people will get it. This place just buzzes all day long as the Wellingtonian foodies flock to frequent it. The black New York tiles are stunning as are the hanging pendant lights and stunning grey, duck-egg blue, white and yellow interior . It’s very European; elegant and classy. I  love the mix of booth seating along with separate small tables with chairs as well as larger tables with stools for groups or those who prefer to sit up higher. Continue reading

What’s hot in Hawkes Bay right now?!

 M

This week I tried some outstanding restaurants/cafes on my work trip to Hawkes Bay. I ate like a Queen (literally) as she actually does eat almost paleo-like!

I was so excited to learn that the Beach House & Kiosk, a former cringeworthy café, not far from my Brooklyn hood, had been kissed by a frog and turned into a Princess. All credit of course goes to ex Elements café owners Scott and Nicola Barrett. These guys have a great rep and they’ve struck gold yet again.

I’d read and heard good reviews about Comes and Goes, so being competitive as I am,  I wanted to check it out pronto. After a tough Sunday hill walk we arrived bang-on noon. There were people milling outside the door so my empty stomach and heart was in my mouth, as I was concerned there was a queue.  Foodietraveller and her hubby do not wait.  Sadly we were told the wait was 40 mins for a table, however I suggested we’d be happy sitting on the bar stools, so our host obliged. We also had a great view of the busy, open kitchen. Continue reading

Craving a visit to Auckland CBD, I booked a solo flight on Labour weekend. As my foodie haunts list is huge, I had to narrow it down and plan logistically, so I could fit in as much as possible. Boy did I do well. Continue reading
