Take 2: Texas Beer and BBQs

After arriving in Houston and meeting fellow foodies, our first stop was to get us some Texan BBQ. Burns Original BBQ was on our long list. It was in the burbs and in a dinkie dive with only outdoor seating, but boy were the ribs, brisket, beans and potato finger lick in’ good. We stayed at the lovely Hilton Sam Curio hotel. That night we took in The Houston Astros vs Miami Marlins baseball which was great. Poor Houston now though, do they have a problem thanks not to Hurricane Harry. Continue reading

Baby Baby!

I was in my element in this funky Auckland Thai/Vietnamese Asian-fusion eatery/cocktail bar in Ponsonby- Mekong Baby. The décor is amazing and is different depending on what nook and cranny you sit in. If you’re looking for something a little more intimate, they have the Opium Den (ok!), the S &M room (ok- no wait I think that says Ms. M’s room!) and the Mekong Room. The food and service here above all that is outstanding. Continue reading

A slice of ‘curry’ heaven!

I’ve suddenly gravitated back to Indian cuisine. I used to make Indian curries from scratch years ago, but one day hubby decided he didn’t like Indian, so strangely I stopped eating it too. However halleluyah, he’s seen the light, after trying a curry in Fiji, and now is ok with it again.   Roll on a trip to India to do a comparison. Anyway I digress. Curry Heaven has just opened up in Bond Street and it’s already a gold mine. Continue reading

Green, green grass of home!

My last minute organised catchup with friends at the Botanist in Lyall Bay, proved worthwhile. We were all newbies and terribly excited.  I was warned about the bad service and wait for coffees/food, however that so did not happen for us. I take positive good vibes with me and always have a pleasant experience. It was perfect on all counts with a stunning Welly day to top it off. Continue reading

A taste of Japan in Wellington!

Finally I made it to Tokeyo with some gals after work. This place came highly recommended and it did not fail to disappoint. In fact it exceeded our expectations. We were warmly welcomed and as we’d arrived earlier than expected, we decided to have a pre-dinner drink. Continue reading

What’s hot in Hawkes Bay right now?!

 M

This week I tried some outstanding restaurants/cafes on my work trip to Hawkes Bay. I ate like a Queen (literally) as she actually does eat almost paleo-like!

Where’s Charlie!

Funny how I’ve just returned from Vietnam and I’m still eating Vietnamese. Where’s Charlie isn’t your typical Vietnamese café name but quirky all the same. I have eaten at their stall at the Capital market in Willis St, and thought it was just ok. However their new premise on Northern Lambton Quay is the perfect spot for the government and corporate crowd. It will give Ngon café and Seize café a bit of a run for their money. Continue reading

I was so excited to learn that the Beach House & Kiosk, a former cringeworthy café, not far from my Brooklyn hood, had been kissed by a frog and turned into a Princess. All credit of course goes to ex Elements café owners Scott and Nicola Barrett. These guys have a great rep and they’ve struck gold yet again.

Fabulous Food in Petone!

I’d read and heard good reviews about Comes and Goes, so being competitive as I am,  I wanted to check it out pronto. After a tough Sunday hill walk we arrived bang-on noon. There were people milling outside the door so my empty stomach and heart was in my mouth, as I was concerned there was a queue.  Foodietraveller and her hubby do not wait.  Sadly we were told the wait was 40 mins for a table, however I suggested we’d be happy sitting on the bar stools, so our host obliged. We also had a great view of the busy, open kitchen. Continue reading

New Kid on the block!

Dillangers Brasserie and Bar, Midland Park, used to be the horrendous Soho Brown and is now the latest hip bar to hit Wellington’s CBD. It’s already going off with a bang. Same owners as Green Man (which is popular but unfortunately not taken my fancy) but this one has. It’s way more classier and a defo 4.5 star qualmark rating, even without a hotel! As Astoria is always busy, it’s a much needed and a good spot for a business breakfast or coffee meeting, lunch, dinner, drinks or nibbles.  Their French chairs outside are gorgeous. Continue reading
