When Pappa Rich first opened in Grey St, opposite Hotel InterContinental, there was a queue to get in. This is always the way in Wellington and although I don’t like to wait, I love the fact that it demonstrates that Wellingtonians are curious foodies. We’re eager to test and support new venues. If you’re a Wellingtonian and you still feel a little cheated with our summer, although it’s making up for it, you won’t be cheated of your riches here. The food is fabulous and affordable. When the sign above the door was erected, many folks thought this was going to be an Italian joint, as they were fooled by its name. Don’t be fooled by the cute logo on the door either as it looks like an Asian version of the KFC Colonel!

Pappa Rich first opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and has expanded internationally to Brunei, China, South Korea, Singapore, USA, Australia and now little ‘ole New Zealand.

Hubby joined me on my second visit and we definitely will return. I just have to bring along some of my other foodie mates too. The challenge will be to eat our way through the extensive 160 items. Let alone the food, there are 60 types of beverages even offering an iced matcha, special blend of coffee or tea and organic milk and juices. We spotted a lady having a drink which looked like a dessert. Even she was overwhelmed with it, but excited at the same time.

They offer freshly-made Roti Canai, traditional Hainan bread with Kaya and butter, Satay, Nasi Lemak, Fried Kuey Teow, Curry Laksa, Asam Laksa, Chicken Rice, Prawn Mee, Mee Goreng, Ice Kacang and many more. The Nasi Goreng fried chicken and Nasi Lemak rice dishes were delish as was the Chilli Pan Mee noodle dishes. I can’t wait to sample some of their bready things as a treat and a drink next visit.

The fun part of dining here is you get to mark down on a sheet what number dish you want from the menu. When you are ready you press a buzzer and they take your order. Your dishes then arrive fairly fast.

The décor is clean and comfortable and suits the corporates who want a quick bite or those who want to natter and linger. They open at 11am-9pm and Thurs to Sat til 10pm. Halleluyah; PappaRich practices what he preaches. Go find some gold.
