After a 14.5km Sunday hill walk we thought it would be nice to finish up on Welly’s waterfront, so where else to go for a cheap and cheerful Asian? Wagamama of course. We tend to visit once a year and this place has grown on me. It still turns out some darn good tucker. We were quickly seated and we had the most amazing, helpful waitress from Northern England. She did ask had we been before and wanted to just let us know that the chefs in the open kitchen cook to order and each dish arrives when ready, not in sync and all at once. We were aware of this and as much as this used to be annoying, we actually were fortunate as we all seem to have our mains arrive almost at the same time.
The menu is amazing and you just can drool for hours over the various sides of edamame, wok fried greens, squid, ribs, steamed buns etc. We chose a 5 pork dumplings as a starter to share and these were delish. I had one and let the boys have two each. For mains you can choose pork, chicken, duck ramen, seafood broth, beef curry, or various donburi and teppanyaki dishes. I love donburi but left hubby to choose a beef one and instead I tried, upon our waitress’s recommendation, the most divine spicy chicken salad. The fresh flavours and crunch were fabulous and it was a nice balance of sweet and sour. Our friend chose the salmon teriyaki and inhaled it at top speed. I was the last to finish.
The drinks menu is extensive and includes beer, wine, sake, freshly squeezed juices, soft drinks, teas, coffees and hot chocolate. I was nearly tempted to try a tea that once poured turns into a flower in your cup. Next visit for sure as I find that so intriguing. Maybe you’ll beat me to it.
No dessert needed for these athletes of course as that would have counteracted all the calories we burnt off. You can opt for banana katsu, passionfruit cheesecake or icecream if you need something sweet.
The décor inside Wagamama is Scandinavian minimalistic, but funky with a gorgeous view of the harbour. It’s clean and sleek and works like a charm. There are tons of seats and it’s just a nice place to chill and eat delicious, nutritious food with family or friends. They also do takeout.
Who’s your Mama Wagamama?!
