Mojo is taking over the world! Let it be said that I think I have visited all the Mojos in NZ including Auckland, Dunedin and the new one in Market Lane Apartments in Welly.  I even followed in Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown’s footsteps,  after she officially opened the one in Xian, China (see blog post). Nothing mojoey gets past me. Now they have opened one up in the historic St James Theatre on Courtenay Place.

I took my lovely client for lunch there recently and this was his second visit. It’s so spacious and I adore the banquette seating and stylish Scandinavian/European decor. You can choose from a delectable array of counter food or from the menu. The menu is designed by Martin Bosley and there is a big focus on open sandwiches. If you’re not a bread fan you need to cast a wider glance to the pastas or salads.

For our mains I recommended my client try the cheeky mince on sourdough toast which I’ve had at Poneke Mojo.  This my friends is not just your ordinary mince on toast. It’s a slow-cooked, braised beef that pulls apart and is perfectly topped with a poached egg, served on their gourmet sourdough. He thoroughly enjoyed it.  I was so close to ordering the sticky pork ribs and the smoked fish sounded good too however my stomach yearned for something a little lighter. My eye caught sight of the pumpkin wholemeal quiche and rocket, feta salad in the cabinet and this hit the spot nicely.

We didn’t have room for any of the yummy slices or even a coffee. I would highly recommend the gluten-free rocky road. It’s really good as a treat and/or try some of the gorgeous, freshly-baked sweet loaves on the counter. They will serve you a loaf slice toasted if you wish.

The service was excellent; a nice balance of friendly/efficient and they definitely set the bar high here for other cafes to follow. Most impressed.  I’ll get my mojo on for a Sunday lunch date with hubby, as those ribs have my name on them.
