The Ramen Shop in Newtown, is a spinoff business of Hillside Kitchen and Cellar in Thorndon. This concept originated as a pop-up shop around town back in May 2013 and this is now their permanent home. It’s described as a “ramen (everyday Japanese streetfood) joint with a kiwi twist”. It’s extremely clever, unique and it works!
I love finding new places in the ‘burbs and this place is a little honey. Bright, funky Japanese-Scandinavian decor greets you as enter embraced by a cool vibe.
There is a long large wooden table to the right to seat large groups and about 5 small tables for two on the right. They’ve done really well to make it feel light and spacious.
It’s a no frills place re service as you order at the counter and seat yourself, however the quality of the food and presentation is by no means cheap. The noodles are handmade.
They open at 11am and have daily blackboard specials. I ordered the spicy pork belly tonkatsu soup and hubby had braised pork and coriander rice bowl. We had a delicious side of cabbage kimchi which added a further kick and aided our gut health. Kimchi is the new black don’tcha know. I just could not stop oohing and ahhing over my broth. It was such soul food. Oprah would love it and it tickled my tastebuds for ages. Good sign.
They have a wide range of snacks e.g. sesame crisps, raw veges, mixed pickles, steamed buns as well as rice bowls and ramen. You can also order additions of 24hr pork belly (that’s my choice next time), extra broth, egg, garlic miso, nori etc.
They cater for vegetarians, vegans, takeaways and are open for dinner. The wine selection behind the counter looked sensational so perfect for my next girlie night out. Who wants to join me?
