Ooh la la..I’m so glad French Cancan has danced from Newtown into the CBD. I love the funky pink patterned wallpaper with pink and lime green cushions; it’s so more European than the old ‘milkbar’ premises they had. They do need more street signage though; perhaps a blackboard on the footpath, as it’s actually easy to miss this place on upper Willis St. It’s located across the road from the street market stalls.
On entry you are greeted with “Bonjour Madame” by the owner, in a gorgeous authentic French accent, which is irresistible. There is a combo of tables and booth seating to choose from or you can prop yourself up on a stool in the window. I like how they serve their water in mason jars, laid on the table, allowing you to help yourself.
Their menu is basic but adequate and it offers a good variety of quiches, chicken pie, venison roll, sandwiches, baguettes, croissants, and the famous croque monsieur. They do offer soup but the menu states only in winter. Mmm this can confuse us Wellingtonians, as in summer it often can can feel like winter right?. Unfortunately salads still appear on the menu but they don’t offer these anymore as apparently “they weren’t working”. What? I think the French do THE best salads in the world. My green side salad with my delicious quiche du jour (chicken and asparagus) was divine, and it came with the yummiest vinaigrette. This comes highly recommended and yes I did see real men eating quiche!
Their counter bulges with tempting sweet pastries and cakes if you want something lighter, or to take away. I had to share a delectable almond croissant which was crunchy, buttery with delicious frangipani inside. Parfait! On another visit, I also got to sample the custard flan topped with kiwifruit which was equally delicious. This was washed down with a really good long black (they use Caffe l’affare brand).
Service is friendly and efficient and the food is really affordable. A bientot French Cancan, we will dance again.
