The Café Queen is back in Welly (that’s me) and I was bursting at the seams to try Mexico in Dixon St, Wellington. I love the one in Britomart so I was excited to hear it was coming to Welly.
The dark entrance is mysterious and it’s such a nice surprise when you turn the corner. It transports you to another place. The music is cool, the colours are vibrant and the female staff are dressed like Frida Kahlo!
The service is very friendly and attentive, however a little too attentive that it becomes somewhat intrusive, as I was having a deep and meaningful conversation with my friend. Oh well.
We tried a standard and coconut margarita accompanied with some guaca and corn chards. The portion was of a good size and very tasty. You can choose from soft tacos or quesadillas with various meats or fish, or try the specialities on the menu or on the blackboard. We had to try the recommended Mexican fried chicken which was fab as were the orange beef quesadillas. They specialise in hot sauces too which you can buy on site or online. Very cool. Normally I can polish everything off but we were too full, so there was no room for the churros. Que lastima. Hasta luego Mexico!
I also got to farewell Crazyhorse Steakhouse, which closes on the 28th September. They are offering a Friday Express Luncheon for $20 and they have four mains to choose from; beer battered fish with mushy peas, steak fries and tartare, sirloin with mash, greens (broccoli) and red wine jus, ribeye with steak fries and green beans or panko chicken, slaw and gravy. We were in foodie heaven.
The wine list is extensive however this was not an option for us today! You can also eat a la carte which I’ve done before and there is a fantastic selection of octopus, scallops, steak tartare, roast cauli through to their special steaks with amazing sides. Their desserts sound amazing but not for those dieting e.g. snickers pudding or banana and walnut bread with maple syrup.
The service was amazing and we all had ‘special requirements’ and were treated respectfully and nothing was a problem.
Adios Crazyhorse. Sad to see you go. I wish the Bresolin boys all the best with their move to yet another new venture, ‘Bresolin’ further up Willis St. I also look forward to seeing what the Boulcott St Bistro guys have in store for us, with their new burger place in these premises. I will race my fellow foodie friends to trying these places first!
